A Rare Visitor - A Baby Crested Caracara!

On February 10, an approximately 4 week old Crested Caracara was brought to the center from the Viera area. It had fallen out of the nest, but it was not injured. The bird was still being cared for and fed by its parents on the ground. However eagles were spotted close to the nest, and eagles are a threat to the young birds.

This Caracara is only the second of its kind ever treated at Florida Wildlife Hospital. Caracaras are members of the falcon family. They are listed as a threatened species and are not often seen in central Florida.

The little Caracara made itself at home and started eating right away. Its favorite food is frog legs - an expensive and difficult to acquire delicacy. After two weeks, the bird lost its baby fuzz and was able to spend time in an outside cage. We will need a few more weeks before we can return the Caracara to the area where it was found. It is important that it receives flight training and learns to find food.

If you would like to contribute for food, care and medications for this and the other 3000+ wildlife patients we receive yearly, please use the donations link below, the PayPal or JustGive buttons on the right or mail to : Florida Wildlife Hospital, 4560 N.
