Patient Updates:
All of the least terns have been released. Since the people at the site they chose for nesting this year were not happy with the mess the terns caused, we hope to have some “vacancy” signs out on some more hospitable locations by next season. The 4 spotted skunks are still with us, residing in an outdoor cage since they are now fully “loaded” and we don’t want to have to evacuate the building if one becomes annoyed. They are scheduled for release soon.

New Patients:
We currently have numerous baby squirrels, 1 baby pelican, and assorted other wildlife patients. Two of our recent patients have been victims of monofilament fishing line and hooks. One of them is very lucky, considering the predicament he found himself in earlier this week. Brevard County Animal Services delivered a great blue heron to us with hooks in both his wing and leg and with monofilament line running between them and wrapped tightly around his leg. His wounds are starting to heal, and with some antibiotics, good food, and a little time, he should be able to be released very soon. The second was a juvenile pelican with a hook in his wing and monofilament and a steel leader wrapped around his leg. His wound required stitches, but is also not life threatening. He will be heading back to the beach as soon as he has completely healed.

If you would like to contribute for food, care and medications for these birds and the other 3000+ wildlife patients we receive yearly, you may donate online using the donations links of PayPal or JustGive or mail donations to : Florida Wildlife Hospital, 4560 N. US Hwy 1, Melbourne, FL 32935. Check out our website for more information or email to request more information. Great News

Grant Funding Received

As a nonprofit organization, we rely on funding from donations and grants for both wildlife care and environmental education programs. Florida Wildlife Hospital & Sanctuary, Inc., is very grateful to have received a grant award from the Community Foundation of Brevard’s Adlerstein, Cabic, & Shannon Funds. This grant will be used to purchase an animal intensive care unit and a projector. The animal intensive care unit regulates both temperature and humidity, which will give our youngest patients, who are unable to thermoregulate, and severely critical adults an increased opportunity for survival in a controlled environment. The addition of a projector will complete our presentation system and allow us to share our environmental education programs with more members of the community. We have also received a grant from the Brevard Zoo Conservation Fund which will be used for the printing of brochures and to purchase educational materials for our environmental education programs.
